Checking Your Roof for Damage after a Monsoon
Arizona’s monsoons are notorious. Every year, they come through and leave a path of destruction with their heavy winds and their flooding rains. Some storms will take down trees or pull up flower beds. Others will just knock over the occasional lawn chair or leave a scattering of leaves across the lawn and driveway.
One thing you need to be particularly careful about during the monsoon season is damage to your roof. Stronger storms can pull off tiles or drop heavy tree branches on your roof, causing major damage. Sometimes, you may look at your roof and think that everything’s ok, but there may be damage there that can lead to more serious problems if left unchecked. Here’s what you need to do to check for roof damage after a monsoon:
Start with the Obvious
Major damage to your roof will be pretty obvious. Walk outside and look at your roof: Do you see any missing tiles or shingles? Do you see any tiles or shingles hanging on by a corner? Do you see piles of tiles or shingles on a spot on the roof or the ground? Are huge branches on top of your roof? Is there a hole in your roof?
If you see any signs of obvious or major damage to your roof after a storm, you need to call a roofer right away – as in right that minute. A storm could roll through later that night that could flood your house with water. You need an AZ roofer who can make emergency repairs or at least implement a temporary protective measure to prevent further damage to your roof or your property.
Look Inside Your Attic
Smaller damage to your roof won’t be as obvious – especially not immediately following a storm. But if you get in the habit of checking your roof and your property for signs of damage after each monsoon, you’ll spot the signs of minor or unnoticeable damage faster. For example, you may have minor damage that is letting in water slowly. You may not notice that there’s a problem until a few weeks later when enough water has had the time to penetrate and before you know you will be needing a water damage restoration team to have the issues fixed. So before you can see see yellow or light brown spots on your ceiling or the top of your walls, you might want to step up and take action.
Head into your attic quickly after a monsoon and look around for signs of damage. Shine a flashlight on the roof and the beams, looking for obvious water or for signs of it, such as dark spots or mildew. You can also check for small holes by looking for areas where any light is shining through the roof. If you see any signs of water damage or light shining through, you should call a Glendale roofer right away. The damage may not be as severe, but you don’t want to let the damage to continue, even if it is at a slow pace.
Hire a Roofer
There are so many ways that your roof might be damaged after a monsoon that you might not be able to recognize if you had it pointed out to you. The damage can be where you can’t see it, or it can be very slight, making it hard to recognize. Only a trained and experienced roofer would know that the damage is there and what needs to be done about it.
You should hire a Az roofer to perform an inspection of your roof once the monsoon season is over. You should also consider getting a roofer to come take a look if you’ve had a particularly bad storm, especially if you see that branches or trees are down in the area. If the storm was bad enough to cause that damage, it was strong enough to cause damage to your roof.
